This time of year people all over southern Africa (esp in Zambia) just set their fields on fire to get rid of all the tall grass instead of cutting it. It makes quite a site.  Sometimes there will be a fire burning on the side of the road and the flames can be 10 feet tall or so and when you drive by you feel the heat of the fire.  It’s a quick an easy way to get rid of all the grass before planting, but in some places it actually hinders the farming productivity because the soil is already really acidic so the burning doesn’t help like it might in a control burn in a forest.  Here are some frames from a grassfire close to where was staying.
