Debrie Kassa is awesome. She too comes to the feeding center for food everyday. She is full of personality. One day she let us come to her house and told us her story. She is 80 years old. When her husband died the government moved her out of her home and placed her in a room on the porch of these peoples house. The government assured her it would be temporary. That was 28 years ago. For the last 3 decades she has lived in this room with the rain and the rats for company. Yet she is still full of joy. Making jokes and laughing at me and my poor attempt to converse in amheric is we walked to her home. It’s quite a trek for her and all uphill to the feeding center from her home. She typically stops and rests twice alongside the road to catch her breath and let her ankles rest.
